There are literally millions of ways that homeowners are able to successfully complete an inexpensive home improvement project without an actual home remodeling contractor to do it. If you are like the hundreds of thousands of other homeowners, though, that would like to do multiple home renovation projects then it may be entirely possible to do so. When it comes right down to it home remodeling does not have to be that expensive at all, except for the materials that are used to actually make it happen. On the contrary, though, if you or your spouse is interested in all with home projects and do-it-yourself projects then there are thousands of ways inexpensive home improvement can be done: it just takes a little bit of creativity!

We all know that home remodeling contractors can be some of the most expensive people to deal with. If you are looking for interesting projects to do at home and don’t care about the length of time it takes to get them done then here are some suggestions that will not only make your home look beautiful, but will also add value to your home:

Expanding the Bathroom or Bedroom

One home improvement project that many people undertake each year is the expansion of specific rooms in their homes. For example, you may desire to make your Master Bedroom or Master Bathroom a bit bigger, and there are definitely cost-effective ways to get the job done. Even though a contractor may charge thousands of dollars just to expand one room, there are solutions to every problem and expanding a room does not have to be that difficult. A couple of the things that you need to know, though, is the basics of expanding rooms. For example, will you need fiberglass insulation after you knock down a wall? Will you need extra electrical wiring? These are a couple of the questions that can easily be researched if you know enough and are confident to do the job yourself.

Adding Pizazz to the Bathroom

The bathroom is another place that people often find themselves wanting to remodel. For example, there may not be enough space in the bathroom for everything currently there. However, is it really necessary to expand the whole room? You may be able to get away with building a series of corner cabinets for the bathroom in order to have extra storage space. This is certainly a remodeling project that doesn’t need to be left to home remodeling companies, and is definitely something that homeowners can do themselves.

Re-doing Floors and Carpets

Another area that is commonly remodeled is flooring and carpets. The flooring in the kitchen is some of the most common projects that are undertaken during remodeling of houses. If you want to remodel the kitchen floor or any other floor in the house then this also can be done without a contractor. While contractors may charge a few thousand dollars to replace floors, how hard would it be to lay tile yourself or replace the carpet yourself?

All of these things are inexpensive home improvement suggestions if you are trying to think of ways that you can remodel your house alone. Home contractors don’t always need to be called and there is definitely a lot of money to be saved if they aren’t.

In these hard economic times, some of the best home improvement advice could center on home security. This post will focus on home security lighting as a deterrent to crime for your home. Using some imagination, you can integrate these steps with other home improvement ideas as well.

Satisfactory lighting can be and is a very valuable deterrent to crime. Whatever lighting might help reduce your risk of becoming a victim, the right lights, utilized properly will be the effective deterrent to burglars and other intruders and improve your home security.

Outside Lighting:

Outside lights are critically important, especially near doorways and at the rear of your residence, where break-ins typically occur. All round security lighting that is set-up high out of reach, and is tamper proof, will greatly improve your home security and help to protect your home.

Lighting in carports and garages is critical. An automatic garage opener is the best choice. All the best garage door opener fitted today use a light that operates when the opener is activated, lighting the garage interior. In carports, it’s best to leave a light on permanently, have a light on a timer, or use a motion sensor to activate the light.

It is best to use a motion detector on all exterior lights that are not left switched on. The principal benefit of this for home security, especially in the backyard, is that the light warns you that someone is in your yard. When there can be some problem that dogs, cats, or even birds will trigger off the sensor and cause the lights to come on, if you set the sensitivity of the sensor right this will not be a issue. In the front yard, any type of lighting will be efficient, but make sure that the lighting design covers the entire front and sides of the home. Sensors can be utilized however they will be prone to “false alarms” induced by things like people walking down the sidewalk, or also kids playing.

Inside Lighting:

Whenever you go out for the evening, I suppose that like most people you leave a light on, the Police call these lights “burglar beacons”. A burglar beacon is a single light that is left on so you do not return to a dark home when you get back.

Regrettably these lights are a sign for the burglar that you are out. When you go out for the evening or away on holiday make certain several lights are left on, in different parts of the home, and furthermore a radio, put them on timers, from the exterior your house should look as if someone is home at all times to improve your home security.

Few topics involving home improvement advice can have such far reaching effects as the topic of asbestos in your home. Also, few other home improvement topics warrant the extreme need for home improvement help as asbestos abatement and containment.

If you are concerned about asbestos exposure you are not alone. Many individuals wonder if they have been exposed, and if so, what they can do to help protect their health. If you think that you have been exposed to asbestos or are looking for ways to prevent an exposure, look no further. We will go over some of the health problems that arise from asbestos exposure, and what can be done to prevent them.

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that has been used for a variety of different applications. Many homes may have this material in their insulation, as it is a fire retardant. Once exposed, individuals can inhale the microscopic asbestos particles and take them into their lungs. Once there, the fibers can cause lung cancer. If prolonged exposure occurs, an individual can also develop cancer in the chest cavity and abdomen.

It is important to note that many individuals have experienced brief exposure and been just fine. The fine asbestos particles are difficult to see and get rid of, so it is common for them to remain in their air for long periods of time thus increasing the risk of cancer. Smokers are at an increased risk for side effects due to exposure.

If you think that your home may have asbestos there are several places that you want to look. It is important to remember that products today do not contain the fiber, only things built in the 1970’s or earlier.

- Steam pipes, boilers, and furnace ducts could be insulated with an asbestos blanket or asbestos paper tape. If the fibers become damaged or are repaired improperly, they could lead to exposure.

- Resilient floor tiles- the backing on many vinyl sheet flooring and adhesives could contain asbestos. Sanding the tiles or scraping them could release the fibers.

- Cement, millboard, and paper that were used as insulation around furnaces and wood burning stoves. Repairing or removing these appliances could stir up the fibers.

- Door gaskets- in furnaces, wood stoves, and coal stoves.

- Sound proofing or decorative material sprayed on walls and ceilings. Sanding, drilling or scraping the material could be harmful.

- Cement roofing, shingles, and siding. This usually only cause a problem when sawed, drilled, or cut.

If you think that you have asbestos in your home, don’t panic. If the material is good condition, you can leave it alone. It is only when these materials are disturbed that there is a problem. If you find a damaged area- discard it using asbestos gloves and a facial mask. Your local health or environmental officials will be able to walk you through the proper disposal procedure. Always check with them when beginning any remodeling job.

Remember, the only way to find out if something contains asbestos is to look at it under a microscope. Enlist the help of a professional, and let them handle the details. They are trained in such removal procedures and can help ensure the safety of your family and loved ones.

Another of the often overlooked home improvement ideas out there involves using stained glass. This home improvement idea is not for everyone, but it can still offer a great way to improve your home in the right situation.

If there is one way to throw a new light on your home, it’s through the stained glass you put in your windows. Whether you want to enhance old windows by replacing some of the panes, or are complementing the new Pella windows you’ve installed, stained glass can lend an air of grace and quiet elegance to a room.

Where and how you incorporate stained glass into a window treatment depends a great deal on the style of windows you have, and what you want to spend to achieve that multi-colored glow.

In an older home that has wood framed windows with six or nine panes, it’s possible to take out the upper row of glass, and replace those panes with new ones cut from older stained glass that can be salvaged from yard sales, flea markets and auctions.

New stained glass that is handmade, can be quite costly due to the craftsmanship that goes into it. That’s why cutting old panels of stained glass is a cost-effective alternative, that can give you several panes from one sheet. Even if the glass has small cracks or separations in the colored sections, they are easily repaired.

If you have installed a Pella casement window in your kitchen, a semi-circle of stained glass framed and set into the wall over top, will add jewel tones to the warmth of morning sunlight. Or you might choose to replace the entire bathroom window with stained glass, making it a decorative way to preserve your privacy.

The old and the new can come together in harmony. Take a look at your home and consider whether you’d like to warm up the house with stained glass, or combine it with the sophistication of new Pella windows. It’s a pairing guaranteed to create a unique new look.

Another of the somewhat seldom considered home improvement ideas out there involves using corrugated roofing materials. There are pros and cons with this home improvement idea, but it can still offer a great way to improve your home in the right situation.

The roof is a very essential element of the house, building or any structure. The roof provides the shelter and the protection from nature’s elements and factors such as rain, snow, sleet, as well as sunlight. But basically, the roof is like a wall of the house, a panel if you will; only it is placed and located on top of the house or building. Roofs are basically characterized in two ways, the flat and the sliding. Some combine both. Roofs may be made from different materials, all throughout the history of mankind, different materials have been used as roofing materials and one of the more successful is the corrugated roofing.

Corrugated roofing started out as sheet-metal. They form some sort of waves on the roofing for design as well as for purpose. Nowadays corrugated roofing is made from different materials, such as Stainless Steel, Fiberglass, Aluminum, Coated or Painted Steel. Usually they are treated with special finishes to prevent corrosion. Corrugated roofing materials are easy to use and install. They are relatively affordable than other roofing materials and are a long lasting solutions. Corrugated roofing materials are usually used for the sliding type of roof.

Steel corrugated roofing materials can be quite long lasting. They can be painted with different colors and treated with different solutions to make them even more long-lasting. They are also pretty lightweight and easy to handle. Installation can be done with a minimum number of persons. What’s more they are very affordable. Corrugated roofing materials that uses fiberglass are very translucent which can provide natural lighting to the house or building. They are watertight like other corrugated roofing materials and are very lightweight and durable. Corrugated roofing materials are also more rigid than a flat sheet of a similar type and thickness, this results to a substantial reduction in cost and weight.

The disadvantages in using corrugated roofing materials are that they are very lightweight and can be hard to work with if the weather is extreme. Fiberglass corrugated roofing materials cannot withstand high heat, fiberglass also easily chips while metal and aluminum corrugated roofing materials dent easily and is hard to restore. The temperature plays a major facto with corrugated roofing materials and if they are not installed properly they may detach. Because corrugated roofing materials are usually very thin, they can be very noisy when it rains, snows or other extreme weather conditions. The corrugated roofing materials sheets can also be very heated during hot sunny days and the heat can radiate to the rest of the structure making it very uncomfortable. To eradicate this problem, a false ceiling must be placed, the gap in between should be well ventilated so that the hot air will be dispensed through that manner. Utilizing light colored corrugated roofing materials or painting it with light colored paints if possible will also decrease this problem.

When installing corrugated roofing materials, there is some basic building materials needed such as, Filler strips, these are wood shaped to fit the contours of the panels, special nails for corrugated roofing materials, plastic washers, you will also need a drill and drill bits, a saw might also be needed for some cutting. Corrugated roofing materials are sold in panels with different sizes, before purchasing, it is best to determine which size and how many panels will be needed so that cutting will not be necessitated thus avoiding waste and additional costs. With corrugated roofing materials you get high=quality roofing materials that is very affordable, easy to handle and install and can be designed to compliment any house and design.

Buying a mobile home offers a first step for many first time buyers. There are some basic differences between a mobile home and a “conventional home”, and some of these differences relate to mobile home improvement later on.

To own a home is one of the dreams every common man cherishes, even from the childhood. With hard work and years of savings, he might be able to build or buy a dwelling for him and his family. More than a place to stay safe from bad weather and sun, a home is also a handy investment option. In this context, buying mobile homes is an option worth considering. Recently, in the US, there has been a surge in the number of people opting to live in mobile homes. Buying mobile homes is cheaper than other forms of housing and is widely seen as a good investment option as well. Statistics show that nearly 8.8 million American households live in mobile homes.

Before getting on with the details of buying mobile homes, let us look at what a mobile home is. A mobile home is a residential structure that’s been constructed in a factory and is then shipped as a single piece to the address. Sometimes it is a misnomer as only 5% of these type homes ever leave their original site.

Buying mobile homes is an even better option when it’s placed on land on a concrete slab with a well and full septic system. It will suit those who are looking for inexpensive housing. It’s also a good idea if it is sitting on a nice piece of land such as an acre or more if you have plans to build a new home on the lot, or if you are an investor.

Before buying mobile homes you have to make sure that the mobile home conforms to the US government’s Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards (known as the HUD code). That is, each mobile home must conform to a Federal building code rather than to the building codes at their destinations.

When looking into buying mobile homes, it is a good idea to check for the latest varieties of mobile homes available in the market. Nowadays, mobile homes options vary from single-section homes to large, multi-section units equipped with a fireplace or a cathedral ceiling. Buying mobile homes is a good housing choice for most due to wide price range available.

When buying a mobile home, make sure that everything is in place. First, shop around as much as you can until you find the home of your choice. Compare the cost, floor plan design, interior and exterior decor as well as the construction methods and materials used. Make sure that your mobile home displays the label certifying code compliance and the dealer is licensed with the Division of Motor Vehicles, Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. When buying mobile homes, it is always better to secure the manufacturer’s as well as dealers warranty on the home.

In the context of buying mobile homes, there will be a lot of finance providers offering you loans in addition to dealer financing. Take care that you shop around for the best finance and insurance plan. While finalizing the contract, precisely understand which items on the contract are your responsibility. Clearly define yours and the dealer’s responsibilities so that there is no ambiguity in the deal. Do not leave any blank spaces on the contract, and be certain that all the items which you and the dealer have agreed to are covered by the contract. Say no to oral agreements. Read the entire contract before signing it, and make a point to save a completed copy for your records. And if the dealer is to retain the wheels, axles and other mobilizing hardware, this should be stated in the contract.

Before investing in a mobile/manufactured home, be sure you have a place to put it. Remember, the structure must be tied down in accordance with the specifications provided in Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Rule 15C-1 or the specifications provided by the manufacturers. Remember, such structures are open to on site inspections.

Budget decorating can be an efficient and inexpensive home improvement, and it can offer an easy home improvement project. But, what does budget decorating really mean? Does it mean the same thing to you that it does to me? Probably not, and here’s why.

The term “decorating” is easy to understand; it concerns making something (a room, a space) prettier, better organized, more functional, more esthetically pleasing. Okay so far.

It’s when we start talking “budget” that the confusion sets in. For instance, I have a friend who thinks following a budget means scrimping on 350 count sheets instead her favorite 700 count set. Me, I like to keep food on the table, gas in the car, and the cable modem hooked up. My decorating budget is what’s left over, unless it’s close to the holidays when that becomes my gift budget.

You may have a zero dollar budget (been there, my friend). You can still re-arrange your space, clean and de-clutter it, and look around your house for items to use in new, more effective, or unusual ways. You can create a pleasant, comfortable area without taking out a home equity loan or borrowing against the college fund.

Budget decorating is really about getting the most value and impact for whatever dollars you have available to spend on decorating. Put like that, it’s not such a difficult concept, is it?

Budget decorating does not mean buying the cheapest of everything or making do with uncomfortable or inconvenient furnishings because they haven’t fallen into pieces yet. It does involve some stretching of the imagination to see the potential in a marked down can of yellowish paint of a slightly odd hue that just happens to coordinate with another marked down length of fabric. It also helps to be willing to embrace various decorating styles. Eclectic is the budget decorator’s friend!

It’s important to spend your money on the most important items first. If you’re decorating a bedroom, make sure that you have the best mattress you can afford. Stunning draperies lose some of their charm when viewed after a night of tossing and turning on a lumpy mattress. If it’s a home office that you feel the need to spiff up, think about the desk and the desk chair. Oak filing cabinets look wonderful, but if I have to choose between sufficient room to work and a fancy filing system, I’ll stick with my painted metal cabinets, thank you very much.

My decorating budget may be less than your budget, and it’s certainly less than my friend’s budget, and that’s okay. Each of us can work within our means to create spaces that reflect our style and outlook on our world. When we sit back to enjoy our newly decorated rooms, we can do so with the satisfaction of knowing that there’s still enough money left over for brownies!

Cheap home improvement finance might not always be easy. It can require going to several different lenders for quotes as well as several hours spent comparing the interest rates and terms of several possibilities. All of that work can pay off in the end, though, because the cheapest home improvement loans can save you hundreds or even thousands in the long run.

Before you can find the cheapest home improvement loans, though, you need to know a little bit about what you’re looking for and what lenders are looking at.

Factors that affect your loan

You may have to visit several different lenders to find the cheapest home improvement loans, but every one that you go to will be taking several things into consideration when creating a quote for you.

The first thing that they’ll look at is the equity in your home, which is an indication of how much of the mortgage on the home has been paid off. The equity in your home is one of the major factors in determining the maximum amount that a lender is willing to loan you, since it is an indication of how much money they’d get back if they had to repossess the home. Usually, the cheapest home improvement loans are offered to people who have high equity in their homes.

Of course, there are other factors to be considered as well… things such as your credit score, the type of improvements or repairs that you’re wanting to do, and national and local interest rates can all be major considerations when a lender is trying to determine if you qualify for the cheapest home improvement loans.

What to look for in a loan

Even if the first quote that you receive seems pretty good, you should take some time to see if there are any other options available in order to get the absolute cheapest home improvement loans that you can.

Visit several banks and finance companies and request quotes from each of them… you may find that the interest rates and terms that you’re offered differ at least slightly from institution to institution.

Carefully look at all of the quotes that you’ve received, trying to find the one with the lowest interest rate that still has flexible repayment terms. Narrow your options down to only two or three quotes, and decide from there which of the offers has the best options for your needs.

While it may seem like more work than it’s worth sometimes, taking your time to find the cheapest home improvement loans to finance your repair or improvement project can save you both time and money in the long run.

The extra time that you spend now will likely result in you repaying the loan faster and having more free time and money afterwards.

Plan ahead to get the best results from your home improvement painting project if you have aluminum or vinyl siding. Aluminum and vinyl siding have particular characteristics and problems to be addressed, right up to and including your home improvement paint selection.

Anyone with older aluminum siding is well aware of the paint chalking problem. Just rub your hand along the old siding and the chalky old paint will be all over your palm. Trying to get paint to stick to this could be a real problem. This is due to oxidation of the paint. Siding manufacturers originally referred to this problem as a “benefit”. They called it, “self cleaning”, as the paint literally washed off the house.

Older vinyl siding is also a problem. UV light fades vinyl siding over time and the siding becomes very unsightly.

Many unfortunate homeowners and contractors have experienced the dismay, when they repainted their homes, only to find the new paint peeling off a few months later. Both problems with older aluminum and vinyl siding can be overcome with proper cleaning, surface preparation and re-painting.

Cleaning

You will need to rent a powerful pressure washer with at least 3000 psi. You will want a pressure washer powerful enough to remove most of the old chalky paint off the aluminum siding or, to remove any dirt buildup on the old vinyl siding.

Start at the top course of siding and work your way down. You will need to keep the pressure wand fairly close to the siding surface to effectively remove the old paint. In some areas, you may find that the paint comes off to the bare metal. Be careful near windows, corners, soffits and doorways. The water under pressure, can be forced behind these areas causing damage. You can add TSP or other cleaning solutions to the reservoir for mildew, algae or other grime built up. If you do use a cleaning solution, be sure to completely rinse it off with your pressure washer. You should allow your home to dry for several days in dry, sunny weather before proceeding to the painting process.

If you are repainting vinyl siding or vinyl coated aluminum siding, you may need a surface de-glosser. This is a solvent type product used to remove any shine on the surface and to help your first coat to adhere better. You will have no trouble finding a good de-glosser at your local paint supply store.

Application

The commercial type airless sprayer offers several advantages. It will draw the paint directly out of your 5 gallon paint pails, through the hose and into your spray gun. These are available to rent at many tool rental locations and even some paint supply stores that supply contractors. If your paint is real high quality latex, it will be thicker than regular latex paint and will require a more powerful airless sprayer.

Priming

This step is equally as critical as the step above. Actually, the cleaning and surface preparation phases will make or break the results of your project.

A latex paint additive called emulsa-bond is great for the first coat. Emulsa-bond is a bonding agent you will add to the first coat of paint or primer, to help it to bond to the old siding.

Try to use the best grade exterior latex paint, rather than oil or other solvent based paint. Latex paint seems to keep up with the expansion and contraction of the siding very well. The high quality latex paint you can buy often needs no primer. Add the bonding agent directly into the first color coat. Check with your paint supplier whether or not to use a primer. The rule of thumb is, when in doubt, use a primer. If you use a primer, add the bonding agent into it before applying. There are also bonding agents available for oil or other solvent based paints. One type is called penetrol. These are usually available at a painting contractor supply store.

Many contractors will spot prime areas, especially where bare metal is exposed. Many painters don’t like spot priming because it can lead to an uneven looking top coat. When you put a primer coat on, you should prime the entire home. This gives a uniform surface finish later on.

The Finish Coat

Your top coat will be color only. You should check with your paint manufacturer to see if you need one or two top coats after the base coat. Like mentioned above, buy the highest quality exterior paint.

Finally, remember that proper cleaning and surface preparation are the two main ingredients to a successful painting job. A bonding agent in the first coat is also very critical to avoid paint peeling off later on. Using these techniques, one can re-paint a home and have paint that will last far longer than the original factory applied finish.
