Making Sense of Construction Improvement

Making Sense of Construction Improvement

$72.5

The book sets out deliberately to challenge the current construction improvement debate and the way in which it is conducted. It confronts the supposedly neutral nature of construction ‘best practice’ and demonstrates that that the advocated recipes seldom stand up to critical scrutiny. It further argues that commonly accepted components of best practice such as lean construction, partnering and collaborative working rarely live up to the claims made on their behalf. Such recipes invariably suffer from definitional vagueness, and are constantly reinterpreted to suit the needs the different audiences. Making Sense of Construction Improvement argues that construction sector improvement techniques cannot be understood in terms of their substantive content, and are best understood in terms of the rhetoric within which they are presented. The author also contends that the persuasiveness of such recipes depends upon the extent to which practitioners can adopt them for the purposes of making sense of the changes they observe happening around them. To be accepted as ‘best practice’ construction improvement techniques must also resonate with broader agendas of socio-technological change. The author charts how the best practice debate has developed from the aftermath of the Second World War through to the election of David Cameron’s coalition government in 2010. Attention is given to the way in which the improvement debate throughout the 1960s and 70s was shaped by the broader aspirations of the post-war social consensus and the associated desire for a centrally planned economy. Attention thereafter is given to the way the construction sector was radically re-shaped by the advent of the enterprise culture. The privatisation of the sector’s client base, coupled with the withdrawal of the state as a provider of mass housing, caused a significant and long-lasting shift in the construction landscape. Private sector clients similarly experienced extensive downsizing while outsourcing their procurement capabilities. Such strategies were frequently justified by mobilising the rhetoric of business process re-engineering (BPR). Contracting firms simultaneously faced unpredictable workloads and increasing market competition. In response, the sector at large chose to base their competitive advantage on leanness and agility. Hence the emergence of the hollowed-out firm as the dominant form of organising. These structural trends combined to provide the backcloth to the industry improvement agenda throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Making Sense of Construction Improvement argues that the popularity of improvement recipes such as partnering, collaborative working and integrated teams can be understood as strategies for overcoming the loss of control associated with downsizing and outsourcing. In contrast to other textbooks, Making Sense of Construction Improvement does not offer advice on how to manage construction projects more effectively; the aim is rather to

Construction Process Improvement

Construction Process Improvement

$124.99

The construction process has come under intense scrutiny in recent times and this is set to continue as building owners and users demand better value for money from a more sustainable built environment. The construction sector’s actors are responding to the challenges implicit in this drive for greater competitiveness and social responsibility. New forms of procurement, innovation programmes, knowledge management, CAD-supported processes, predictive and diagnostic tools, and many more initiatives are helping to transform the sector. Construction Process Improvement showcases 21 examples of how directed efforts are being taken to raise productivity and quality, reduce waste and costs, and provide more certain and durable products for the sector’s customers. Each example is the subject of a closely coupled collaborative project in which answers are being sought on matters of strategic importance to companies. The chapters that describe and discuss these projects balance state-of-the-art reviews with details of the work being undertaken and, in many cases, the results that are being implemented within the companies. Construction Process Improvement deals with issues that matter to best practice companies and researchers in industry and universities. It covers, amongst other topics, modularisation for manufactured housing, life cycle methods in housing, commercial buildings and services installations, tools and techniques for performance prediction and diagnostics, coordination of design and production processes, novel use of traditional materials, new forms of procurement and the role of innovation, public private partnerships, partnering structures, learning organisations, management of major refurbishment, management information systems, TQM and continuous improvement, CAAD methodology, tools and 4-D CAD, and facilities management. This book analyses the way forward for improving the construction process, in particular the links between research and development and industrial competitiveness. The implementation of new methods and thinking in companies is examined and important advice for senior managers and researchers is offered.

Sheetrock & Shellac: A Thinking Person’s Guide to the Art and Science of Home Improvement

$4.99

In a world of extreme makeovers, this book is a thoughtful, adventure-filled, witty look at what the space we live in says about us, the pleasures of home renovation projects great and small, and how home renovation can change our lives. In Sheetrock & Shellac, David Owen recounts his renovation and home construction projects in small-town Connecticut – from catching the home improvement bug while watching workmen replacing a leaky roof to his first tentative foray into DIY (successfully building an enclosure for a bathroom radiator that had “turned into a sort of low-tech factory for converting splattered urine into odor and dust”). As his skill grows, so does his confidence: replacing a broken light switch turns into wiring an entire room, making bookcases is followed by building an office. Some of the more overly imaginative projects – for instance, an ambition to install sinks and hot and cold faucets in all the rooms of the house – never come to fruition but are amusingly recounted for other intrepid home designers.

Home Improvement, DIY, and Decorations Accessories in Malaysia

Home Improvement, DIY, and Decorations Accessories in Malaysia

$195

How to Strategically Evaluate Malaysia. Perhaps the most efficient way of evaluating Malaysia is to consider key dimensions which themselves are composites of multiple factors. Composite portfolio approaches have long been used by strategic planners. The biggest challenge in this approach is to choose the appropriate factors that are the most relevant to international planning. The two measures of greatest relevance to home improvement, diy, and decorations accessories are “latent demand” and “market accessibility”. The figure below summarizes the key dimensions and recommendations of such an approach. Using these two composites, one can prioritize all countries of the world. Countries of high latent demand and high relative accessibility (e.g. easier entry for one firm compared to other firms) are given highest priority. The figure below shows two different scenarios. Accessibility is defined as a firm’s ease of entering or supplying from or to a market (the “supply side”), and latent demand is an indicator of the potential in serving from or to the market (the “demand side”). Framework for Prioritizing Countries. Demand/Market Potential Driven Firm. Relative Accessibility. Accessibility/Supply Averse Firm. In the top figure, the firm is driven by market potential, whereas the bottom figure represents a firm that is driven by costs or by an aversion to difficult markets. This report treats the reader as coming from a “generic firm” approaching the global market – neither a market-driven nor a cost-driven company. Planners must therefore augment this report with their own company-specific factors that might change the priorities (e.g. a Canadian firm may have higher accessibility in Canada than a German firm). Latent Demand and Accessibility in Malaysia. This report provides a detailed overview of factors driving latent demand and accessibility for home improvement, diy, and decorations accessories in Malaysia. Latent demand is largely driven by economic fundamentals specific to home improvement, diy, and decorations accessories. This topic is discussed in Chapter 2 using work carried out in Malaysia on behalf of American firms and authored by the United States government (typically commercial attachés or similar persons in local offices of the U.S. Department of State). I have included a number of edits to clarify the information provided. Latent demand only represents half of the picture. Chapter 2 also deals with micro-accessibility for home improvement, diy, and decorations accessories in Malaysia. I use the term “micro” since the discussion is focused specifically on home improvement, diy, and decorations accessories. Chapter 3 deals with macro-accessibility and covers factors that go beyond home improvement, diy, and decorations accessories. A country may at first sight appear to be attractive due to a high latent demand, but it is often less attractive when on

Construction Management

Construction Management

$84.99

The construction industry continues to face substantial demands for improvement in quality and cost control, and a reduction in contract disputes. A number of management concepts have been promoted to help achieve this, but many in the industry find the concepts confusing and are sceptical about their usefulness. This book brings together, in a single volume, the main management concepts relevant to the construction industry, providing an objective account of the concepts and showing how they interrelate: * value management * buildability * benchmarking * total quality management * partnering and alliancing * supply chain management (new for this edition) * re-engineering In addition to a new chapter, a new section on strategic alliancing has been added. Text and references have been updated throughout.

Benchmarking in Construction

Benchmarking in Construction

$111

This is the first post-Egan book to look at benchmarking and KPIs (key performance indicators) in the construction industry. Benchmarking is one of the key management techniques the construction industry now needs to adopt if it is to meet challenging new efficiency and productivity targets as well as clients’ demands for best value. Contracts are increasingly being awarded only to contractors who can demonstrate the lean construction practices that come with benchmarking. This authoritative and accessible book: * clarifies the thinking behind benchmarking and why firms must now adopt it *shows how to set up effective benchmarking *explains the theoretical background and offers clear, practical guidance *demonstrates best practice though reference to case studies. There are nine case studies describing the use of KPIs and the application of the EFQM excellence model – including contributions from Morrison and John Mowlem The author Steve McCabe is senior lecturer in the School of Property and Construction at the University of Central England in Birmingham. He has conducted extensive research in quality improvement techniques and benchmarking and has wide experience in industry with a number of contractors and within the local authority sector.

Managing Performance in Construction

Managing Performance in Construction

$130

Construction is the country’s single largest manufacturing industry. However, it is a sector that lacks benchmarks against which to gauge performance. This modern thinking intends to provide insight to construction productivity improvement. Taking cues from manufacturing sectors such as computer, automobile and chemical companies, this book will apply the lessons learned to building construction. Supported with a range of pedagogical devices, the book will be of equal value to construction managers and civil engineers, and students with different learning methods.

Construction Delays

Construction Delays

$89.95

Delays in construction projects are frequently expensive, since there is usually a construction loan involved which charges interest, management staff dedicated to the project whose costs are time dependent, and ongoing inflation in wage and material prices. Many techniques are used to analyze delays. Some of these methods have inherent weaknesses and should be avoided. This book points out the shortcomings of these faulty methods and explains how a delay analysis should be performed. It then describes specifically how the analysis is done with CPM schedules. A explanation of delays and delay damages, presented in a straightforward, accessible manner, should be useful to public and private owners, construction managers, general contractors, subcontractors, designers, suppliers, and attorneys whose work involves them in the construction industry. The discussion will include subtleties of the process, such as shifts in the critical path, and non-critical delays. The subject of damages is covered in detail, including the major categories of extended field overhead and unabsorbed home office overhead. Likewise, the damages suffered by the owner, either actual or liquidated, are also explained. Finally, a chapter is devoted to managing the risk of delays and time extensions from the viewpoints of the various parties to a construction project. A discussion of early completion schedules and constructive acceleration is also included. In this new ediion, all chapters are updated to reflect the changes in the construction field since the first edition published over l6 years ago. The 2nd edition includs over 40% more information such as new methods for analyzing delays with examples of the proper approach. The author also includes a new chapter on risk managment which focuses on the delay-related risks of the various parties in a construction project. Explains the different categories of delays Addresses the concept of concurrency and also non-critical delays Discusses the more common approaches used for measuring and analyzing delays and the strengths and weaknesses associated with them Prevention of Time-Related Delay Problems

Advances in Construction Materials 2007

Advances in Construction Materials 2007

$295

The book is a compilation of recent research results on building construction materials. The construction industry consumes extreme volumes of material, and the growing demand for quality and safety require continuous improvement of materials and material compositions. A deep understanding of material behavior is essential to enable efficient construction: light-weight or heavily burdened structures ask for the development of innovative composites or new material compositions. Civil Engineers and Materials Scientists from all over the world present their ideas for further material developments, the testing of structures and solutions for in situ applications. Many of the innovations, composites and the design of existing material mixes, especially for concrete, are discussed. These include high-strength and high-performance concrete (HPC), self-compacting concrete (SCC), shotcrete, and textile or fiber reinforced concrete (FRC). Moreover, the enhancement of material variations and the improvement of their properties are observed for most construction materials (e.g. wood, masonry, steel, polymers). This book gives a good overview about the state-of-the-art in construction material science. Some of the world??'s leading experts have contributed in honor of Professor Dr.-Ing. Hans W. Reinhardt. The book starts with a review about his scientific achievements up to his recent retirement. Some contributions are presented at the conference ???Advances in Construction Materials??? (ACM2007) held in July 2007 in Stuttgart.

Performance Measurement for Construction Profitability

Performance Measurement for Construction Profitability

$111

Performance measurement is the mechanism by which firms inform themselves of their true performance and locate unnecessary costs through the supply chain. These can then be converted into substantially higher profits in a carefully targeted improvement programme. If the construction industry is to meet the performance improvements demanded by end users, and to replicate the efficiency and profitability gains of other sectors, it urgently needs to address formal performance measurement. Aimed at all those at the sharp end in every sector of the construction industry, including clients and end users, this will be a highly practical, easy to read guide, focusing strongly on the day-to-day needs of managers at all levels. Using the everyday business language of construction firms, it explains how to set up and run performance measurement, self-assessment and benchmarking systems. It is comprehensive and informative with plenty of real-life examples and most importantly, tells you what to do differently on Monday.

Corporate Strategy in Construction

Corporate Strategy in Construction

$84.99

This book draws together the main elements of strategic management theory and considers their relevance to contemporary practice in construction. It helps students understand what corporate strategy involves and how it is possible to develop a proactive approach to the management of key organisational resources that are essential to attain objectives. Understanding of the importance of strategic management has developed rapidly in the past decade. Recent economic events have shown that all organisations must continually reassess their approach to achieving intended objectives, especially improvement in customer focus. The construction industry is no different. Construction employers require graduates who are competent in understanding the basis of strategic management, the range of techniques that will enable the organisation to identify opportunities and threats and respond to rapid change. This book provides an overview of the context in which construction projects are carried out, and the potential methods that exist to conduct strategic analysis and decision-making. By analysing case studies, Corporate Strategy in Construction: Understanding today’s theory & practice demonstrates how vital lessons can be learnt from other industries by benchmarking practices and developing alternative ways of delivering value to clients. A key message of the book is that construction organisations can, with a better appreciation of strategic management, increase their potential to innovate and create sustainable competitive advantage.

Collaborative Relationships in Construction

Collaborative Relationships in Construction

$139.99

The book collects the latest research on both contractual and conceptual collaborative practices in construction. It identifies common problems faced by the industry and draws out practical implications. Construction projects are increasingly run in ways that undermine the traditional boundary of the firm and sometimes also the definition of the project coalition. This poses challenges for construction firms whose clients demand ever increasing performance improvements as well as those firms who want to improve their strategies for greater collaboration to give themselves competitive advantage. The editors identify three main themes: collaborative relationships, operating both in frameworks and within networks of contacts, e.g. relational contracting in partnering, supply chain management and other procurement-driven initiatives. The second theme is frameworks, both contractual frameworks binding parties together over a series of contracts, and conceptual frameworks used to develop future performance improvement arising from the proactive strategies of firms. The third theme is the network of relationships that supports individuals and firms within the project coalition in delivering services and adding value to improve performance. These networks define the investment and incentives supporting the inter-firm and intra-firm relationships, as well as the formal contractual conditions through which such incentives flow. Networks of information exchange define the structure of the activity and help predict organisational configurations for successful project outcomes.
