Decluttering House

decluttering house
How/where do I start in in turning my home into an oasis? Need advice on decluttering/cleaning.?

I’m sitting here googling “declutter where to start” because I’m so overwhelmed! I want to turn my home into an oasis, but I can’t seem to make headway. Years ago when I was single, I decluttered my whole house in one week, got rid of about 44 giant trash bags of stuff. I want to do this again, but it’s frustrating because now that I’m married I can’t go on the declutter rampage that I want to do! Every time I try I end up with another box for my husband to go through and then piles start accumulating all over the house again.

I’m thinking about getting one room “perfect” and then going from there, but that will require paint and buying a rug.

Any advice on where to start, what to do to get started on this task would be appreciated!

Thanks, Kerry

Pick a room….Generally your living room is the hardest to do.

Your bathroom is the easiest.

Remove everything that’s not nailed, screwed or glued down. Place it in boxes out side the room and scrub the room down ..recaulk, patch and paint. If your makeup is all over and makes a mess put it in shoe sized boxes with paper towel liners. Make boxes for make-up you use everyday and things your don’t use as often. Medication in another box, lockable if you have kidlets. Consider paint towels rug accessories and alter the room to work. Have a basket with rolled extra towels. In your trash put a large handful of supermarket bags and drape one over the top – this makes it really easy to empty when full and have another liner ready and waiting. Things that should be handy are Toothpaste, hair and tooth brushes, dental floss, shaving cream, razors, spare toilet paper, lens cleaners and cases and hand soap. They get prime space in the cabinet or drawer. If there is anything in there you have not used in 6 months – pack it up.

Use the same methodology for your other rooms.

Stop checking with your hubby…Box it up and label with a decent inventory list and move it to a storage spot. If he asks for something you will know what box to go to. Every 3 months go through those boxes and toss or garage sale or donate what you have no need for.

From the minds of multi-million selling suspense authors Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker comes House – an epic supernatural thriller that gives a new meaning to the phrase “haunted house.” In rural Alabama, two couples find themselves in a fight for survival. Running from a maniac bent on killing them, they flee deep into the woods. They seek refuge in an old house that’s been vacated for years . . . or so they think. They soon discover that others are dwelling in the lower level of the house – and they don’t take kindly to visitors. With danger present in the house, they try to leave – but the house won’t let them. Worse, they soon realize the killer has purposely lured them to this house. As they huddle around an old fireplace, a tin can falls from through the chimney. Scrawled on its side is a message from the killer: He claims to have killed God and now demands more dead bodies. The characters come to realize that the house, while real, mirrors their own heart and soul . . . and unless each can defeat the evil within, the evil in the house will surely claim them. House is a modern tale that will have readers searching their own spiritual pulse long after they reach the last page.

The restoration of a majestic old home provides the exhilarating backdrop for Danielle Steel’s 66th bestselling novel, the story of a young woman’s dream, an old man’s gift, and the surprises that await us behind every closed door…. Perched on a hill overlooking San Francisco, the house was magnificent, built in 1923 by a wealthy man for the woman he adored. For her and for this house, he would spare no expense and overlook no detail, from the endless marble floors to the glittering chandeliers. Almost a century later, with the once-grand house now in disrepair, a young woman walks through its empty rooms. Sarah Anderson, a perfectly sensible estate lawyer, is about to do something utterly out of character. An elderly client has died and left her two gifts. One is a generous inheritance. The other, a priceless message: to use his money for something wonderful, something daring. And in this old house, surrounded by crumbling grandeur, Sarah knows just what it is. A respected attorney and self-described workaholic, Sarah had always lived life by the book. With a steady, if sputtering, relationship and a tiny apartment that has suited her just fine, Sarah cannot explain the force that draws her to the mansion and its history–to the story of a woman who once lived in the house, then mysteriously left it, to a child who grew up there, and a drama that unfolded in war-torn France…and to a history she never knew she had. Taking the biggest risk of her life, Sarah enlists the help of architect Jeff Parker, who shares Sarah’s passion for bringing the exquisite old house back to life. As she and Jeff work to restore the home’s every detail, as one relationship shatters and another begins, Sarah makes a series of powerful discoveries: about the true meaning of a dying man’s last gift…about the extraordinary legacies that are passed from generation to generation…and about a future she’s only just beginning to imagine. In a novel of daring and hope, of embracing life and taking chances, Danielle Steel brilliantly captures one woman’s courageous choice to pour herself into a dream–and receive its gifts in return. From the Hardcover edition.

A collection of stories that limn the dangers of domesticity   In Lynn K. Kilpatrick’s In the House, anything can happen. A collection of shorts—lists, character sketches, directions, scripts, and instructions— In the House reveals the often conspicuous, yet frequently overlooked, dangers of relationships gone awry.   In a home suffused with fragility or in a kitchen surrounded by knives, Kilpatrick’s men and women navigate around one another’s eccentricities with caution, highlighting the unspoken desires and veiled needs of domestic routine. In these stories those desires collide, illuminating the dangers that can lurk in seemingly insignificant places such as the pantry, a basement, the Miss America pageant, dioramas, or in the mind of the one you love.
